Building Capacity in Washington Tribal Education Programs

Together, Region 16 Comprehensive Center and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Office of Native Education have cleared brighter pathways for Native learners and their families in Washington state.

In 2020, Region 16 was approached by the National Comprehensive Center to participate in a four-state pilot of their newly developed process, Circles of Reflection. The Circles of Reflection is a three-step systematic process designed to bring state education agencies (SEAs), Tribal education leaders, and school administrators together to raise awareness, reflect, and create a plan forward to improve Native students’ and their families’ experiences in school.

Through consultation and collaboration with Native learners, families, and communities, Region 16 and our partners have built on the feedback gained in the Circles of Reflection. The organizations have created resources and integrated new information and skills into a wide range of organizational practices.
