Indigenous Children’s Survivance in Public Schools

Drawing from her book Indigenous Children’s Survivance in Public Schools, Dr. Sabzalian’s talk will highlight the everyday ways that Native youth, families, and educators creatively navigate the colonial dynamics of public education. By sharing both epic and everyday stories of colonialism and survivance, she hopes that all educators will see themselves as responsible for countering colonialism, supporting Indigenous students, and amplifying survivance stories in their own teaching and curriculum.
Dr. Leilani Sabzalian (Alutiiq) is an Associate Professor of Indigenous Studies in Education and Co-Director of the Sapsik’ʷałá Program at the University of Oregon. Dr. Sabzalian’s heartwork is to support the next generation of Indigenous educators in becoming teachers within their communities and to create more just and humanizing spaces for Indigenous students in public schools. Her research also prepares all educators to challenge colonialism in curriculum, policy, and practice.
